As partners in direction for around two decades now, Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha’s films Cross Connection, Prem By Chance, Teen Yari Katha, Bapi Bari Jaa have tackled the genre of ‘youth’ films with good humour and a frothy touch defining their USP within Bengali cinema. With their forthcoming release, Jodi Love Dile Na Prane, they step into celluloid interpretations of literature. They picked Abujh Meye by noted littérateur Sukanta Gandopadhyay for the story of this film.
“Having read the novel some years back, we felt its approach to love was trans-generational. The story is about an unfulfilled love story about a boy and girl, who, due to circumstances are married to other partners and meet after 20 years. A young assistant director, Mainak, while looking for a love story, recalls the love between his cousin Sonada and Paromitadi and finds very good story material in trying to find out why their love did not end in marriage. The question that love still exists forms the crux of Jodi Love Dile Na Prane,” say the director-duo.
Arjun Chakraborty, the younger son of veteran actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty, says, “I have already worked with Sudeshnadi and Abhijitda in Bapi Bari Jaa, so there was a comfort level.” Abir Chatterjee loved the completely new character he was called upon to play. “Paromita, the role I play, is obsessed with the concept of love but does not understand it. This is my first film with the director-duo and work was fun,” says Ananya Chatterjee. The film also stars Koushik Sen, Neel Mukherjee, and young actor Tridha Choudhury. Music forms another strong point though there are only four songs. “Sudeshnadi and Abhijitda gave me complete freedom to experiment. All my singers from veterans like Roopam Islam, Dibyendu Mukherjee and Benny Dayal of Mumbai, to contemporary and new singers like Ishita Chakraborty, Zinia Deb and Soumya Pal have done a splendid job. I have included one composition of Atul Prasad Sen without any musical accompaniment and the result is great,” says young composer Raja Narayan Deb.
