Veteran Odia actor Uttam Mohanty dies at 66, CM pays last respects

Uttam Mohanty had been suffering from acute liver ailments and was airlifted to Delhi from Bhubaneswar.

Veteran Odia actor Uttam Mohanty, who breathed his last on Thursday evening while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in New Delhi, was cremated in Bhubaneswar with full state honours on Friday.

Hundreds of his well-wishers, family members and people from Odia cine fraternity, joined the funeral ceremony at Satya Nagar crematorium in Bhubaneswar.

His son Babushan Mohanty, also a popular actor, lit the funeral pyre. Mohanty is survived also by his wife Aparajita Mohanty, a versatile actor in Odia films.

He died after battling a prolonged illness related to liver ailments. He was 66 and was recently airlifted to New Delhi for better treatment.

After his body was brought from New Delhi, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited Mohanty’s residence to pay his last respects.

Beginning his career in 1977, the popular Odia actor worked in over 150 films.

Some of his popular films include ‘Nijhum Ratira Sathi (1979), ‘Phula Chandan’ (1982), ‘Jhiati Sita Pari’ (1983) and ‘Danda Balunga’ (1984). Mohanty has also acted in over 30 Bengali films and a Hindi film — Naya Zaher. For his contribution to Odia film, Mohanty was conferred with Jayadev Award, state’s highest film award equivalent to lifetime achievement award.

President Droupadi Murmu, Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan and people from various walks of life expressed their condolences on Mohanty’s demise.
