Rishab Shettty’s action fantasy Kantara: Chapter 1 continues to roar at the box office, both across India and worldwide. After witnessing another major fall on its second Monday in theatres, the pan-India film registered a minor spike on its second Tuesday. Thus, it’s slowly and surely moving towards the Rs 500 crore mark at the Indian box office. On Tuesday (day 13), Kantara: Chapter 1 earned Rs 13.5 crore across all languages in India, a slight improvement on its Monday (day 12) earnings of Rs 13.35 crore. That, however, was a massive decline from its Sunday (day 11) collection of Rs 39.75 crore.

Kantara: Chapter 1 has made nearly Rs 640 crore globally, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. On the all-time highest-earning list of Indian titles in India, it’s on the verge of entering the top 10. Kantara: Chapter 1 recently overtook Shankar’s 2.0 and SS Rajamouli’s first Baahubali film. It’s now chasing Gadar 2 and Pathaan.

Kantara: Chapter 1 hovered around the Rs 20-25 crore mark for three days prior to that, garnering Rs 22.25 crore on Friday (day 9), Rs 21.15 crore on Thursday (day 8), and Rs 25.25 crore on Wednesday (day 7). Before that, the film hadn’t gone below the Rs 30 crore mark, amassing Rs 34.25 crore on Tuesday (day 6) and Rs 31.5 crore on Monday (day 5), as per Sacnilk. Kantara: Chapter 1 enjoyed a humongous extended opening weekend, bringing in Rs 63 crore (its highest single-day earnings yet) on Sunday (day 4), Rs 55 crore on Saturday (day 3), Rs 45.40 crore on Friday (day 2), and Rs 61.85 crore on Thursday, October 2 (day 1) on the occasion of Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti.

In its extended opening week, Kantara: Chapter 1 earned Rs 337.4 crore across all languages at the Indian box office. Given the current trajectory, its second week earnings have been far lower, but still enough to make the film near the Rs 475 crore mark. Currently, after 13 days at the domestic box office, the film has amassed as much as Rs 465.25 crore.

The biggest chunk of these domestic earnings stem from not the original Kannada version of Kantara: Chapter 1, but its dubbed Hindi version. It’s crossed the Rs 150 crore mark. The Kannada version follows closely, also nearing the Rs 150 crore mark. The dubbed Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam versions follow these respectively.

The Hindi version of Kantara: Chapter 1 has surpassed this year’s tentpoles like Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi’s courtroom comedy Jolly LLB 3 (Rs 113.25 crore), Salman Khan’s action thriller Sikandar (Rs 129.95 crore), and Akshay’s Sky Force (Rs 134 crore). Its next target is Aamir Khan’s coming-of-age sports dramedy Sitaare Zameen Par (Rs 166.58 crore).

Recently, on an episode of Bigg Boss 19 Weekend Ka Vaar, host Salman had compared the box office performance of Sikandar to its director AR Murugadoss’ new Tamil action thriller Madhrasi, starring Sivakarthikeyan, which earned Rs 63 crore in India. That was Salman’s response to Murugadoss blaming the failure of Sikandar on its lead actor’s lack of punctuality.

However, another South film — Kantara: Chapter 1 — has now far surpassed the domestic box office of Sikandar, just through its dubbed Hindi version. The film, a prequel to Shetty’s 2022 blockbuster Kantara, also stars Bollywood actor Gulshan Devaiah as the chief antagonist. It’s co-produced by Shetty and Hombale Films.
