How Rajinikanth’s Kabali craze unfolded at Aurora theatre in Mumbai

Kabali facing no competition at the box-office from any regional or Bollywood film and with it already having been dubbed in multiple languages, Rajinikanth looks all set to assert his legendary box-office supremacy once again.

Aurora theatre is a tiny single screen theatre situated in a quiet lane in King’s Circle in Mumbai. If you are a South Indian residing in the maximum city and wish to enjoy watching your favourite South Indian movie for the cheapest fare amidst hoot whistles and witty loud audience repartees, Aurora is where you should head to. The craze however reaches a boiling crescendo when it’s a Rajinikanth movie release and the scale of these celebrations have only multiplied with every passing year.

And it was no different for Kabali today. People of all age groups started trickling in as early as four in the morning some wearing Kabali imprinted T-shirts while others dressed in their traditional South Indian fineries – white shirt and mundu- with black sunglasses hanging out from their shirts ala Rajinikanth. Huge cut outs of the megastar were installed at every available space outside the theatre and soon enough a group of musicians arrived ready to kickstart the one-day festival.

And then began the ‘Band Baaja Baarat’ in respect of Rajinikanth. Drum beats of Kabali tunes were played out making revellers go delirious as they danced with gay abandon. Slowly dawn faded away giving rise to the shining sun and gates opened making the privileged ticket holders to rush inside to grab their seats as the first 6 am show of Kabali started getting underway.

Meanwhile outside numbers just started swelling as onlookers too joined in just to soak in the Rajini mania. An amused foreigner who happened to be passing by stopped in his tracks and remained glued to some never-before-seen celebrations happening before his very eyes all because of a movie release.

As the clock ticked, one could hear wolf whistles and raucous claps emerging from inside the theatre. And just when you thought the hysteria outside had perhaps dimmed a bit, in came a new set of aficionados armed with milk packets and coconuts.

Proceeding towards a Rajini cut-out, the fans first bowed their heads in obeisance to their mortal deity, tore open the milk packets and bathed the cut out from head to toe in milk. Next in line was the auspicious coconut breaking ritual indulged in by his passionate fans with much gusto. Once the rituals were over, it was time to shake a leg again.

Among the massive turnout that we witnessed today consisting of males, females, youngsters, senior citizens, not a single one left unsatisfied. A mundu sporting fan who we spoke to revealed how he had been camping since yesterday night near Aurora just to see Kabali on Day One. Yet another fan disclosed how he had bunked college unknown to his parents to soak in the mania.

And amidst this legion of fans we spotted National Award winning director Madhur Bhandarkar arriving for the second show. The filmmaker looked all pumped up to watch Kabali with Rajini’s true fans.

While the film has already managed to grab maximum screen numbers owing to Rajini’s star power, the music has also contributed in keeping the buzz of the movie alive in its run up to the release. Speaking about the popularity of Kabali’s music, Paramdeep Singh, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Saavn said. “The Kabali album is all set to enter the Top 10 streamed Tamil albums of all time on Saavn soon. It is clearly one of the most talked about regional albums of the year thus far.”

With Kabali facing no competition at the box-office from any regional or Bollywood film and with it already having been dubbed in multiple languages, Rajini looks all set to assert his legendary box-office supremacy once again. And all this without even having moved his little finger to promote his films or even tweeting about it unlike his contemporaries. That’s why the man is called God.
