Playback singer and TV host Uma Ramanan passed away on May 1, as reported by India Today. She was 69.  Uma is survived by her husband, AV Ramanan, and their son, Vignesh Ramanan, who is also a singer. Uma enjoyed a successful career that lasted over three decades. Her journey began with the song “Mohanan Kannan Murali,” composed by SV Venkatraman for the movie Sri Krishna Leela in 1977.

After training in classical music under Pazhani Vijaylaksmi, Uma crossed paths with AV Ramanan. At the time, Ramanan was on the lookout for talented singers to feature in his stage shows and concerts. Their collaboration blossomed, leading to a partnership both on and off the stage. Eventually, they tied the knot.

However, the song Poongathave Chocha Thakavai from the musical in Nizhalgal, by Ilaiyaraaja, earned her massive popularity in the Tamil film industry. The late singer has collaborated with many composers, such as MSV, Shankar-Ganesh, T Rajender, Deva, SA Rajkumar, Chili, Mani Sharma, Srikanth Deva, and Vidyasagar. Uma and AV Ramanan also sang a song for the Hindi film Playboy

Uma and Illayaraja teamed up on several memorable songs, including “Aagava Vennilave” from Arangetra Velai, “Oru Jeevan Alaithathu” from Geetanjali, “Poongathave Thal Thiravai” from Nilalgal, “Poopalam Isaikum” from Thambikku Entha Ooru, “Nee Padhi Naan Padhi Kanne” from Keladi Kanmani, and more.
