Musician Travis Barker says getting sober is “the best thing that has ever happened” to him.

The 39-year-old rocker, who has son Landon, 12, and daughter Alabama, nine, with ex-wife Shanna Moakler, said surviving a horrific plane crash at the height of his fame in 2008 inspired him to stop using drugs, reported Us magazine. “I’ve done more drugs than I’d like to say and my memory sucks,” he said.

Barker had to undergo 27 surgeries after the crash, which killed his assistant Chris Baker and bodyguard Che Still, and refuses to take pain medication afterwards in a bid to curb his addiction.

“I went from being a little pink abusing stuff to having a second chance at life. I didn’t want to take advantage of it. Being sober is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

“My son is like, ‘It’s good that you’re sober, Dad. It shows you can be a bona fide rock star and don’t need to be a drug addict,” the musician said.
