Legacy and skills are passed down to the new generation, and brothers Armaan Malik and Amaal Mallik are products of this process. During a recent chat, Armaan opened up about his professional relationship with his brother and shared that while they disagree on a lot of things, no one except him can truly help him unlock his potential.
While appearing on Mashable India’s YouTube channel, Armaan drove around Mumbai talking about his childhood, the future of the music industry and his family. He recalled growing up in a 1.5-bedroom house with 5 other family members and how his father Daboo Malik’s professional struggles impacted him. Talking about his family, he started talking about Amaal and how both of them are rather infamous for constantly fighting with each other while making music.
“There are a lot of times when we disagree with each other. Our fights during recording are famous. For example, there was a song called ‘Chale Aana’, and he threw a book at me. He said, ‘Kya singer hai tu? Tu jaa abhi, ho gaya. (What kind of a singer are you? Please leave; this is over. When I tried to leave, he stopped and said he was just joking,” said Armaan.
He admitted that he didn’t care that his brother was joking and that he actually wanted to leave the studio. He added, “I was really frustrated because I had sung the song 3-4 times and he wasn’t liking it. So I really wanted to get out of there.”
However, Armaan admitted that he understands why his brother gets so worked up while working with him. He said that Amaal is the one who truly knows his potential, and that is why he keeps pushing for a better take. “He knows my potential, and he will keep pushing me until the point where he is completely satisfied creatively. Honestly, he is the toughest composer to work with, for me. People often think that us working together would be easy, but it’s the opposite, and it is harder working with your brother,” said Armaan.
The singer added that Amaal belongs to the Anu Malik school of thought, which is basically making songs that cater to a wider audience. He shared that Amaal never lets him embellish his vocals or style and how he always wants to keep things very simple for the listener.
Apart from professional differences, the Malik family has been on the news for quite some time due to some internal conflicts. It first started when Amaal announced that he is cutting ties with his family for the sake of his mental and physical health. He wrote in a statement shared on social media, “The journey has been terrific for the both of us, but the actions of my parents have been the reason we as brothers have gone too far from one another, and all of this has made me step in for myself, as it has left a very deep scar across my heart.”
However, it seems that all of this is in the past now and the family has reconciled. In a recent interview, his father Daboo admitted his faults as a father and told Vickey Lalwani how he was completely exhausted with his life at one point and had to ask Amaal to pull up his socks and start earning money at the age of just 15. Daboo said. “He’s the first elder son to whom the father comes and says, ‘Beta, main haar gaya (Son, I’ve lost)’. Which father does that to his 15-year-old innocent child? Daboo Malik comes home, hugs Amaal, and says, ‘Iske aage gaadi chalegi nahi meri. Tu kuchh karega kya? (I can’t work beyond this. Will you do something?”
