AR Rahman says he paid families of dead singers whose voices were used via AI in Lal Salaam: ‘My conscience is clear’
AR Rahman sees AI as a tool that should be used for the greater good and called for the need of ethical considerations like taking permissions.

Music maestro AR Rahman recently used artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate the voices of two deceased singers for Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s film Lal Salaam. Rahman defended the move, describing it as an experiment that he deemed “70% successful”. Rahman also clarified that he sought permission from the families of both singers, Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed, and mentioned that they were compensated for the same.
In an interview with BBC, Rahman was asked about how he came across this idea. He said, “I think a lot of people have been putting out clips on TikTok and Instagram, and I was intrigued. One of my assistants, who started a company, was testing out timeless voices, and he sent me a sample of one of the singers who passed away, whom I introduced to the industry. The director Aishwarya was looking for her movie ‘Lal Salaam’ with a unique kind of voice, and I felt that voice would be good.”
The singer called it an experiment and said that he asked permission from their families, and believes it can provide future support for them. He added that they ask for permission by sharing details like lyrics and tunes, and they pay the families. He said, “We pay them (their families). In a way, I felt my conscience is clear.”

Rahman said that the family members of the deceased singers were very surprised and happy at the same time. He said, “They were surprised. The kid said, ‘I’m very happy that my dad is being remembered and getting this compensation.’ I think there’s a legit way to do that; any technology should benefit humanity, you know, not take away livelihoods. So, in this case, I felt good that it’s a great opportunity to go to the families, and they also see the legacy of the singers continue.”
The singer said that AI should not harm humanity and added, “I personally think we should use it like a slave; we should use it for the good parts and not give authority or make decisions that would harm humanity, even if we think it’s 100% correct. Keep it as an augmented tool for humanity to do things that sometimes take hours and hours.”
