Even as we stand witnessing torrential downpours battering the state of Kerala, an upcoming Malayalam film seems to have set its focus on a landscape similarly flooded by heavy rains, burying many hidden secrets. Directed by Christo Tomy, who gained fame with the Netflix true-crime documentary Curry & Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case, Ullozhukku’s (Undercurrent) teaser released on Monday and it hints at a unique and chilling experience, exploring the many shades of people in a small locality.

The 61-second teaser video begins with an extreme long shot of a boat crossing a lake under dark clouds. “I loved you like my own daughter. For that sake, tell me the truth,” the character played by veteran actor Urvashi tells the one portrayed by Parvathy Thiruvothu as the tension rises, bringing them to the brink of tears and discomfort. As the promo progresses, it becomes clear that they live in a house whose front yard and adjacent areas have been inundated by floodwaters. “Don’t you trust me, mom?” Parvathy’s voice is heard in the background as she sneaks out of the house, holding a small packet she tries to conceal.

“Every family has secrets,” the teaser declares, as more characters appear, raising the stakes further. Accompanied by a goosebump-inducing background score by composer Sushin Shyam, Ullozhukku’s teaser concludes with glimpses of what awaits audiences when the film releases on June 21. Produced jointly by Ronnie Screwvala, Honey Trehan, and Abhishek Chaubey, Ullozhukku’s script has been penned by Tomy himself. While Shehnad Jalal handled the film’s cinematography, Kiran Das edited the film. “Lies will drown… Secrets will surface,” the movie’s tagline reads.

Ever since the initial promotional materials were released, anticipation has been high among fans for Ullozhukku, with expectations of a stellar performance showdown between Urvashi and Parvathy, both acclaimed as the finest actors of their respective generations in Malayalam cinema.
