Who would have thought being too good at work might end up being counter-productive, limiting your opportunities? That’s what happened to Oscar Award-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty when a director chose to not work with him as he was too good at what he does. In an interview with Film Companion, Resul Pookutty recalled an incident when a well-known filmmaker ghosted him after discussing his film in detail for several hours. He added even Bollywood ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was scared of him while working in Amitabh Bachchan’s Black.

Resul said he has got almost zero opportunities from Bollywood ever since he won an Oscar. Resul recalled an incident when a top filmmaker ghosted him after discussing his film at length. “I went to his office for hours of narration, and I had my ideas. And I was told let’s start the film in July. They started filming. They never came back to me. So, I wrote to them. It is okay that you didn’t want me but be professional and let me know. But I wanted to one thing: what is that I lack as a person at this point in my career, so that I can correct myself. It was not about money because we never discussed it.”

Resul got a reply from the director after the release of the film, which went on to become a huge hit. “I have been trying to answer your question for the last two years. I don’t know why. Maybe, I am from a village… and it could be the village-boy syndrome. When I met you, when I spoke to you about the film, you were so clear with your ideas. You had so much knowledge about what you do. That scared me. You knew so much about cinema… it should have been a reassurance for me but it scared me. I replied, ‘Thank you so much for your reply. I have moved on with my life.'”

Similarly, Resul recalled the time when Sanjay Leela Bhansali told him that he was scared while working with him in Black (2005). “For example, when I did Black, my first big commercial project… I did enormous work in Black. Even today, when people look at it tell me that it’s a phenomenal work in sound. Black was released, and after two months, Bhansali called me to wish me Happy Eid. Then he told me, ‘You know Resul. In my entire film career, you are the only technician that I was scared of. During the making of the film, I realised every time you were taking the film away from me.’ First, I was shocked. Then I realised that’s the biggest compliment.”
