Prithviraj spills the beans on upcoming directorial Empuraan: ‘You are not going to see Mohanlal winding up his mundu’
Director Prithviraj Sukumaran recently shed light on the Mohanlal-starrer L2: Empuraan's style and tone, revealing that approximately 20 per cent of its filming has been completed.

With a massive line-up of mammoth projects in various languages, Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran is solidifying his position as a prominent figure in India’s show business arena. After playing a key role in Prashanth Neel’s Prabhas-starrer Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, Prithviraj is now gearing up for the worldwide release of his highly anticipated Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life), which will hit the screens on March 28.
Meanwhile, the actor also has a Bollywood film in the pipeline — Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff in the lead roles — which will release sometime in April, keeping the Malayalam star occupied.
However, amidst these projects, Prithviraj’s most ambitious endeavour remains L2: Empuraan, marking his third directorial venture. Serving as the second instalment in a planned trilogy following the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, Empuraan will see Malayalam superstar Mohanlal reprising his role as Khureshi-Ab’raam aka Stephen Nedumpally. Although the film’s release date remains undisclosed, production has been ongoing since late last year.
Now, director Prithviraj, who also portrays a significant character in the movie, has shed light on the highly anticipated action film’s style and tone, revealing that approximately 20 per cent of the filming has been completed. “I have finished my portions in the UK, and I have finished the portions that I needed to shoot in the US, and now I have portions remaining in the UAE and India. So, maybe I have shot about 20 per cent of the film. But I don’t even know if the film I’m making is the sequel that people expect of Lucifer,” he said during a chat with Film Companion.

“You are not going to see Mohanlal wind up his mundu (dhoti) and beat up people in a closed-down factory. That is not what I’m making… So, let’s see… Maybe I will add one of those Bollywoodish end-title songs (laughs),” he added.
Penned by Murali Gopy, Empuraan also stars Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Sai Kumar, Baiju Santhosh, Saniya Iyappan and Sachin Khedekar, all reprising their roles from Lucifer. The new movie is being jointly produced by Aashirvad Cinemas and Lyca Productions.
