Narivetta trailer: Tovino Thomas, Arya Salim bring to life the struggle between the oppressed and the system
Directed by Anuraj Manohar, Narivetta, which stars Tovino Thomas, Cheran, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Arya Salim, and Priyamvada Krishnan, is set to hit screens on May 16.
The trailer of Tovino Thomas' Narivetta is out.Director Anuraj Manohar, who made his debut with the film, Ishq, has shifted gears and genres with his upcoming film, Narivetta. Starring Tovino Thomas, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Cheran, Arya Salim, and Priyamvada Krishnan, the film is set to hit the screens on May 16. Ahead of the release, the makers released a hard-hitting trailer that sets the right expectations about the premise of Narivetta.
The film revolves around a tribal village’s fight to hold on to their land, and their struggles against brutal forces that would leave no stone unturned to deny their demand for rights and ownership.
Interestingly, the promo begins with a visual of a handcuffed person being dragged to the insides of a police station. We see actor-filmmaker Cheran, in his Malayalam debut, playing the role of a senior cop who hopes to curb the protests with peaceful negotiations. And on the other end of this spectrum is Tovino Thomas’ mercurial junior police officer who is itching to express himself in violent means. There are disturbing visuals of police brutality, and it is even more chilling that the film says, “Inspired by True Events.”
Here’s the trailer:
Tovino’s character is asked to ‘not play the hero’ and it is intercut with the people of the land protesting for their… land. We see his character being admonished by seniors, and we are shown how he is at the receiving end of the same police brutality when tables are turned due to certain circumstances that would make complete sense when Narivetta is seen as a whole. Of course, there are also scathing remarks made against the narrative-builders who easily sway the public response to such events.
And the trailer reaches its crescendo when the words, “When system betrays, Revolution begins,” pop up on the screen, followed by Arya Salim’s voice of defiance. While what is said in the trailer gives a clear idea about what the film is about, what is not said in the trailer adds an interesting layer of intrigue to the proceedings.
With music by Jakes Bejoy, cinematography by Vijay, and editing by Shameer Muhammed, Narivetta is written by Abin Joseph, and is backed by Tippushan and Shiyas Hassan. The film was shot in areas around Alappuzha and Wayanad.
