Although it’s been over a decade since Mohini’s last movie appearance, her face hasn’t faded from the minds of Malayali audiences, thanks to her memorable roles in several films. Having worked in various languages across South India — and even in Hindi — she is best known among Malayalees for her performances in movies such as Naadody (1992), Parinayam (1994), Sainyam (1994), Ee Puzhayum Kadannu (1996), Ullasapoongattu (1997), Mayaponman (1997), Punjabi House (1998), Oru Maravathoor Kanavu (1998), Meenakshi Kalyanam (1998), Pattabhishekam (1999), Vesham (2004), and Innathe Chintha Vishayam (2008).

While she has been away from the limelight for quite some time now, Mohini recently appeared in an interview where she discussed various aspects of her life, including the phase when she struggled with depression and even attempted suicide. Revealing that she tried to take her own life several times, the actor claimed that an astrologer told her someone had cast an evil spell on her. She went a step further and alleged that black magic, performed on her by one of her husband’s relatives, was the reason behind the slew of issues she faced during that time.

“After marriage, I was leading a happy family life with my husband and children. But at one point, I realised I was falling into depression. There was nothing wrong with my life. Yet I became depressed. At one point, I even tried to commit suicide, not once, but seven times,” she said during a chat with Cinema Vikatan.

Recalling how she managed to overcome it, Mohini said, “At that time, an astrologer told me that someone had cast a spell on me. At first, I laughed it off. But later, I wondered why I had even dared to commit suicide. It was only after that realisation that I started trying to come out of it. It was my Jesus who really gave me strength.” Born into a Brahmin household, Mohini embraced Christianity in 2006. “All I could think about was dying. I kept wondering why such things were happening even though I had everything. My condition was caused by black magic performed by a woman who was my husband’s cousin. It was my faith in Jesus that saved me,” she added.

In her career as a actor spanning two decades, Mohini has worked with massive stars like Sivaji Ganesan, Nandamuri Balakrishna, Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Shivarajkumar, Vijayakanth, Vishnuvardhan, Vikram, Ravichandran, Sarathkumar, Mohan Babu, and Suresh Gopi. She also appeared in a Hindi movie, Dancer (1991), where she played the female lead opposite Akshay Kumar.
