Malayalam star Mohanlal with Bollywood's Akshay Kumar during the trailer launch event of the former's debut directorial Barroz 3D in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Veteran Malayalam star Mohanlal has been in the film industry for over four decades. After acting in more than 400 films across various languages, Mohanlal recently donned the director’s hat and his debut directorial, the children’s fantasy film Barroz 3D, is set to hit the screens soon. As the film gears up for a Christmas release, Mohanlal is excited to bring a 3D film to Malayalam cinema, 40 years after My Dear Kuttichathan (1984), which was later dubbed in Hindi as Chhota Chetan in 1998.
Talking about the ambitious film at its trailer launch in Mumbai on Wednesday, Mohanlal said, “Entity-wise, Kerala is a small market, but things are changing now. Films are going pan-India. Nonetheless, we (Malayalees) were the first people to introduce cinemascope, process 70mm and make the first co-produced film. We want to try something new. We made the first 3D film in Malayalam. Now, after 40 years, we have made another 3D film.”

Mohanlal also shared how he would like to work in Bollywood and be part of more Hindi films. Pointing out that many of his films have been dubbed in Hindi, he went on to say, “I have done a couple of Hindi films. Even now, if someone calls me to do one, I will. As actors, we don’t have that choice.” He previously worked in movies such as director Ram Gopal Varma’s Company (2002) and Aag (2007), and Priyadarshan’s Tezz (2012).
During the media interaction, the Malayalam legend also spoke about Pushpa 2’s success and added, “I always pray to the almighty that all films should run. I am very happy for Pushpa 2. Films should thrive.” Barroz 3D will hit the screens worldwide on December 25, the day on which the actor’s first movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980) and one of the biggest hits in his career, Manichitrathazhu (1993), were released.
