Mammootty’s Bramayugam earns second spot in Letterboxd’s list of top 25 horror films of 2024; Stree 2 ranks 23rd

Bramayugam and Stree 2 are the only two Indian films to feature in Letterboxd's 'Top 25 horror films of 2024' list.

Since the beginning of 2024, Malayalam cinema has been experiencing a remarkable upswing, receiving acclaim from all quarters. Alongside numerous films achieving worldwide recognition, several also performed well at the box office, boosting the industry’s outlook. The year has been so successful that eight of the 20 highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time were released in 2024.

Now, the industry has gained further recognition, with one of its movies landing a top spot in a list highlighting the best films from around the world in a specific genre. In the “Top 25 horror films of 2024,” released by Letterboxd, an online social cataloging site for films, the Malayalam movie Bramayugam has achieved the second position. Helmed by Rahul Sadasivan, the period folk horror film, starring Mammootty in the lead role, opened to widespread acclaim. According to the platform, the list will be updated monthly until early 2025 with rankings based on the average ratings from Letterboxd members. Only films that have been publicly released are included and a minimum of 1,000 ratings is required.

Produced jointly by Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios, this black-and-white film also features Arjun Ashokan and Sidharth Bharathan in key roles. While its cinematography was done by Shehnad Jalal, editing was handled by Shafique Mohamed Ali and the music was composed by Christo Xavier.

In his review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Anandu Suresh wrote: “Mammootty doesn’t hold back in even the most disturbing scenes in the Rahul Sadasivan film, going all in and extracting the best from himself to elevate the movie.”

Meanwhile, director Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy Stree 2, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles, has secured the 23rd position. Bramayugam and Stree 2 are the only two Indian films in the list. Grossing Rs 837.1 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, Stree 2 currently ranks as the second highest-grossing Indian film and the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024.
