Fahadh Faasil says he’d like to disappear between movies like Aamir Khan and Dilip Kumar: ‘There’s more to life than watching cinema’

One of the most celebrated Indian actors of his generation, Fahadh Faasil is known not only for his outstanding performances but also for his willingness to portray a diverse range of characters and his disinterest in the pursuit of stardom. Besides his home turf of Malayalam, these qualities have also made him sought after by other film industries in South India, as demonstrated by his roles in films such as Super Deluxe, Pushpa: The Rise, Vikram and Maamannan.

While basking in the massive success of his recent gangster comedy Aavesham, Fahadh shared his perspective on why he continues to take on supporting roles in films from other languages rather than focusing solely on lead roles in Malayalam cinema. “The intention of me going there is not to do a Baashha (1995) or a Thevar Magan (1992). It’s pure talent collaboration. I just want to go there, interact with them, ask questions about how they shot certain sequences in some beloved films,” he said during a chat with Galatta Plus.

“I have no sense of timelines; I neither start nor finish things on time. And, none of this (the projects he does) is pre-planned. I am just doing things I am excited about. I always tell this to my audience, my commitment to them is just that I’ll try and make the film watchable. I don’t want them to think about me otherwise, or worry about what I’m doing with my life. Just don’t take me seriously once you leave theatres. Think about me only while you are in theatres. I don’t want people to take the discussions on actors or performances even to their dining tables. Just discuss in the theatre or maybe during the drive back home,” he said.

“Cinema is not beyond that; it has a limit. There’s more that you can do with your life than watching cinema,” he asserted. “The life of a performance (or discussions on it) should be till I do the next film. It shouldn’t go on endlessly. ‘He did Aavesham. Done. Now let him come up with something else,’ this kind of approach sounds more beautiful, right? Why think about him (Fahadh) more than that?”

“Aamir (Khan) used to do this even in the 2000s. He disappeared after Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai and came back with a Mangal Pandey: The Rising and then disappeared again. I have heard that Dilip Kumar Saab used to do that. I like that. I don’t want anyone to talk about me or celebrate me. Just watch my films and that too only if it’s good and if it’s not good, don’t watch it,” he added.

Fahadh is currently gearing up for the release of director Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule, in which he will reprise his role from Pushpa: The Rise as the main antagonist. The film will hit the screens on August 15, 2024.
