Empuraan box office collection day 1: Directed by Prithviraj and starring Mohanlal, Empuraan has made Rs 22 crore on its opening day. Before this, the biggest Malayalam opener was Aadujeevitham, which made around Rs 7.6 crore on its opening day.

Empuraan box office collection day 1: Starring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, L2: Empuraan was released in theatres on Thursday, creating history at the box office. On its first day of release, Empuraan managed to earn Rs 22 crore nett across the country, which makes it the biggest Malayalam opener of all time. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film made around Rs 19 crore in Malayalam, Rs 1.2 crore in Telugu, Rs 80 lakh in Tamil, Rs 50 lakh in Hindi and just Rs 5 lakh in Kannada.

The film had over 800 shows in Bengaluru that witnessed over 43 percent occupancy. In Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, the film had over 350 shows each. In Kochi, the occupancy was over 97 percent and in Thiruvananthapuram, the occupancy was around 85 percent.

Before Empuraan, the biggest Malayalam opener was Prithviraj’s 2024 release Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life, which opened at Rs 7.6 crore nett in India. The third spot is currently held by Mohanlal’s Marakkar Lion of the Arabian Sea, which made Rs 6.8 crore on opening day. The opening numbers of Empuraan are unprecedented in Malayalam cinema, which has slowly but steadily going from strength to strength.

This year, there have been only two Malayalam films that have managed to make some noise at the box office. Asif Ali-starrer Rekhachitram made Rs 26 crore nett during its run and Kunchacko Boban-starrer Officer on Duty made Rs 31 crore nett in its lifetime collection. Empuraan is expected to overtake the lifetime collections of these films in just two days.

In 2024, Malayalam cinema went through its golden period as many films made with smaller budgets made big money at the box office. Manjummel Boys became the biggest Malayalam hit of the year with over Rs 140 crore at the domestic box office. Aavesham and Premalu, which also drew in a huge audience, made Rs 85 crore and Rs 75 crore, respectively, in India. Unni Mukundan’s Marco made over Rs 60 crore at the box office despite getting a lot of criticism for its violent content.
