Weeks after the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) got its new executive committee and its first-ever woman president, actor Shwetha Menon, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal — who served as the organisation’s head before her — spoke out about the circumstances that led to his resignation. Mentioning that he and the other members of the executive committee he led suddenly became “enemies” to many, he maintained that there, however, was no ego among the association’s members.

Recalling that he and the committee faced significant criticism at one point, Mohanlal told Asianet News, “The president is a position. If there is a problem in any organisation, isn’t the president the one who is blamed? There may be people who harbour enmity towards me. I’m not saying whether there are or not. But I can’t say that everyone loves me. Regardless, I don’t understand why there is that enmity towards me.”

Opening up about his resignation from the post of president, Mohanlal explained that he made the decision when he felt it was time to put a full stop to that chapter. For the unversed, the mass resignation of AMMA’s previous office bearers was prompted by the findings of the Justice Hema Committee and multiple allegations of sexual misconduct involving key executive members, including then-general secretary Siddique and joint secretary Baburaj, among others.

He also expressed hope that the artistes who resigned from AMMA earlier would return. “However, it’s their wish, isn’t it? But isn’t it the best decision that women are now leading? They can discuss more issues. Perhaps there was hesitation to speak openly and converse in the previous setup. There is no ego or anything in this. Let them speak; let them do whatever they want. We are here to support all of that,” Mohanlal pointed out.

When asked why more youngsters were not taking the helm at AMMA, the superstar observed, “It’s not enough for me to feel that young people should come. They might not be ready to take responsibility. The tolerance level might be low sometimes. Anyway, let good things happen.”

Mohanlal was most recently seen in Sathyan Anthikad’s Hridayapoorvam.
