From director Pawan Kumar — the man behind the hit Kannada film U-Turn, which has inspired remakes in several languages — comes the new thriller Dhoomam, starring Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil in the lead role. The trailer opens with Faasil’s character addressing a boardroom full of men, seemingly making a pitch.

He points out how every movie opens with an anti-smoking PSA, but implies that the audience doesn’t pay attention to it, or even if they do, the ad has no impact. “What are you trying to say?” Vineeth asks Faasil’s character, who leans in and replies, “Sir, what if we make this ad in a way that people actually see it?”

What unfolds next is a series of shots that tease the suspense-thriller atmosphere of the movie, but don’t reveal much about the plot. The protagonist goes on a morally questionable mission, it seems, and this involves kidnapping, violence, and intimidation. A female friend expresses concern for him, while another man looks scared for his life. Faasil’s character appears to also be mourning the loss of a loved one, going by the several shots of him in a graveyard, but there is a sense that his mission is motivated by revenge.

Dhoomam marks the reunion between Fahad Faasil and his C U Soon co-star Roshan Mathew, as well as a reunion with his Maheshinte Prathikaaram co-star Aparna Balamurali. The movie also stars Vineeth Radhakrishnan, Anu Mohan, and Achyuth Kumar, who played a supporting role in last year’s mega-hit Kannada film Kantara. Like Kantara, Dhoomam is also produced by Hombale Films, the studio behind the hit KGF franchise. In fact, eagle-eyed viewers might catch a quick glimpse of KFG: Chapter 2 in the Dhoomam trailer as well.

In a statement, director Pawan Kumar said, “Dhoomam has been my dream project for over a decade. Over the years, this script and screenplay was reworked many times to get the perfect screenplay that we have now. I am glad and also feel extremely lucky that I got a fabulous production house backing this content and also got to collaborate with artistes and technicians who are the best in the industry. I am looking forward to the release, and I want to know how the audience reacts to this story and theme.”

The film features music by Poornachandra Tejaswi and cinematography by Preetha Jayaram. It will be released on June 23.
