Sydney Sweeney’s younger brother, Trent Sweeney, is not bothered by the backlash the American Eagle jeans ad received. Though the Euphoria star has remained tight-lipped about the controversy, her brother has given a rare glimpse into how the family is handling the situation. Trent, who is in the US Air Force, shared a joke about the whole situation on his Instagram on Wednesday.

Recently, Trent posted a photo of his promotion certificate to staff sergeant and wrote, “It’s them good jeans .” In the second slide, he shared a picture in uniform receiving the certificate and thanked everyone who helped him so far. “IYAAYAS – I definitely didn’t spell AMMO right in that ammo call, but I’m excited for this next step in my career and thank everyone that’s been a part of it so far,” he captioned the photograph.

Sydney also liked that post. Sydney and Trent are very close with each other and with their parents, Steven and Lisa. Sydney once told Women’s Health, “I love my family, and I love where I came from. Anything my family needs, I’m always there for them.”

Who is Trent Sweeney

Trent is two years younger than Sydney, who’s 27. While Sydney built her career with shows like White Lotus and Euphoria, Trent stayed a steady supporter, promoting all her projects on Instagram. Growing up, Trent did a few small acting roles and commercials but chose a different path. In April 2020, Sydney shared a string of photos to mark her brother’s departure for military training, captioning them: “My little bro leaves for basic training tomorrow. Wishing you luck, bud ❤️ When the going gets tough, just remember your sister is tougher than you.” By August that year, Trent had officially joined the United States Air Force. His Instagram also shows he streams on Twitch under the name PeanutButterPaul. Before fame, Sydney and Trent grew up near a small lakeside town on the Washington-Idaho border. Their mom, Lisa Sweeney, worked as a criminal defence attorney, while their dad, Steven Sweeney, was in hospitality.

On their bond, Sydney told TooFab, “Not so much the competitive side, but I roughed him up and tried to push him to do more.” The family moved to L.A. when Sydney was 13 after she said she wanted to pursue acting. “My mom, my dad, my brother, and I were in a regular one-bedroom hotel room for nine months,” she told C Magazine in 2022, explaining the family’s poor financial situation. “I was 16—not the year you want to be living in a hotel, sharing a bed with your mom.”

The American Eagle controversy is not the first time Sydney has been dragged into political chaos. In 2022, Sydney and Trent came under some criticism after posting photos from their mom’s 60th birthday party, where some guests wore hats similar to Trump’s campaign slogan of ‘Make America Great Again.’ At the time, the actor defended the party, saying it was just a fun celebration, not a political statement.

Recently, Sydney appeared in a jeans ad for American Eagle. The ad’s tagline was “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” a play on words ‘jeans’ and ‘genes’. In the ad, she talks about how parents pass genes to their children, affecting things like hair colour, personality, and eye colour, then she says, “My jeans are blue.” Some critics said the ad looked like Nazi propaganda promoting racism, eugenics, and imposing white woman supremacy. American Eagle defended the ad, saying it was always about the jeans, nothing else. They promised to keep celebrating how everyone wears their jeans with confidence.

Even President Donald Trump praised the ad after he found out Sydney is a registered Republican. Vice President JD Vance also took a jab at Democrats for overreacting. Sydney herself has not spoken out about the backlash. She made her first appearance after the ad’s release at the screening of her new movie, “Americana,” on August 3 in Los Angeles. At the event, a person shouted at her, “Stop the ad, that is being racist!” but Sydney ignored the heckling and quickly got into her car.
