Marvel has debuted the first trailer for its upcoming superhero team-up movie The Marvels, which stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani as Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, respectively. In the film, all three superheroes discover that their powers have become intertwined and interchangeable after the villainous Dar-Benn puts a ‘spell’ on them.

The Marvels is a direct sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, which ended up grossing over $1 billion worldwide, mainly because it was the lead-in film to Avengers: Endgame. Kamala Khan made her debut in the Disney+ show Miss Marvel. The Marvels is the 33rd overall film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has experienced a drop in audience interest in the post-pandemic era, despite retaining its position as the highest-grossing film franchise in history.

The trailer shows us how the three central characters discover that they’re switching places with each other every time one of them uses their powers, and also teases the worlds-destroying threat that Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) poses. While the first half of the trailer is mostly comedic — Kamala’s parents also make quick appearances, and we also get a glimpse of what seems like a Bollywood-style song-and-dance number — the second half is action-packed.

Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury, who can currently be seen in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, also appears prominently in the trailer, as he oversees the mission. Fury has been a fixture in the MCU, after first appearing in the post credits scene of the first Iron Man movie 15 years ago.

The Marvels is directed by Nia DaCosta, who previously helmed the crime drama Little Woods, and the horror movie Candyman. The film is slated for release in November.
