Robert Downey Jr says Christopher Nolan ‘doesn’t like’ crew taking bathroom breaks on set, goes to the toilet only twice a day himself
Oppenheimer actors Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt recently attested that it's not easy to work with Christopher Nolan.

Hollywood’s annual awards season officially commenced recently, and Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer has been making a strong impression at various ceremonies. Not only did it win Best Movie (Drama) at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, but it also secured the Best Picture accolade at the Critics Choice Awards 2024 and earned a spot in the Top 10 Films according to the New York Film Critics Online.
The film also earned actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr several awards. The two actors, along with their co-star Emily Blunt, recently attested that it’s not easy to work with Nolan. Recalling that Nolan’s scripts were always printed on red paper with black ink, RDJ humorously remarked, “It’s so hard to read,” while Blunt described Nolan as “private in a lovely way.”
Recalling that she was very nervous and scared the first time she read a scene in front of Nolan, Blunt told Vanity Fair that his words of encouragement were important.
Noting the film industry’s tendency to be wasteful, Murphy noted, “With Chris and on his sets, that isn’t the case. You just go straight to work, and I think the reason he collaborates a lot with people is that he likes to do that thing.”

When asked if Nolan’s sets actually don’t have chairs, as has been rumoured, Blunt said that there was an apple box around, to which Murphy reacted by saying, “Occasionally.” RDJ added, “Human resources are scarce, and the idea is that this is a spartan endeavour.
“I think that Chris, from all the films he’s done, he deplores waste,” RDJ pointed out, earning a quick “yes” from Murphy. “He is a conservationist of the highest order,” RDJ noted, with Murphy adding, “Like all this kind of convention has developed around film sets that are kind of crackers. There’s no video village, there’s no monitors.”
“If I see Nolan, I throw my phone,” RDJ said, emphasising the impact the director has had on him. “He doesn’t even really like it when you go to the bathroom, but he understands you have to,” RDJ said, recalling the time he asked Nolan upfront when he was planning to use the washroom, to which Nolan replied firmly and clearly, “11 am and 6 pm,” blowing the actor’s mind and prompting him to respond, “Are you f***ing with me?” RDJ, nevertheless, added, “But he won’t ask anyone to do anything that he’s not willing to do himself twice as hard.”
