Michelle Williams says late ex-boyfriend Heath Ledger had ‘incredible sensitivity’; makes rare comments about him and daughter Matilda: ‘Thank god there’s…’

In response, Williams said, “So special, so special. Thank god there’s Matilda.” Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams met each other on the set of Brokeback Mountain and started dating soon after. In 2005, they welcomed Matilda. Ledger and Williams were in a relationship for three years. In September 2007, her father, author Larry R Williams, revealed that the two actors had split up. He passed away a few months later from an accidental overdose.

When Shepard described Ledger as “this heart here that’s just leaking out of everywhere”, Williams added, “Yeah, an incredible sensitivity.” E! News quoted her as saying, “We had a baby, but I suppose maybe the good thing about being young is that you don’t have so much life experience that you can contextualise things. So, you’re really just going with the flow.”

Opening up about motherhood, Williams, who shares three children with her current husband Thomas Kail, said, “Kids are such great life checkers. They force you to put your best self in front of them. You can’t abdicate your life and your work and your own desires, but you do have to put them in check and figure out which master you’re going to serve.”

Following Williams and Ledger’s breakup, her father, Larry R Williams, told The Daily Telegraph, “We’ve known about their troubles for a while, but it’s always a very difficult thing in life when these things happen. I know Heath and Michelle still care about each other deeply and are very committed to being great parents to their daughter.”

He also attributed their split to the demands and pressures of Hollywood. “You can never be stunned by what happens in Hollywood – I learnt that when we were dealing with Michelle’s career when she was younger. Michelle was grown up at 16, and just like Heath, her life has had an extremely fast pace to it. But they are both very talented artistes, and they live with their hearts. I feel tremendously for her and for him and hope they will find what they want in life. I have a great respect for Heath, and I know he cares tremendously for Michelle.”
