JD Vance pushes wild conspiracy theory over Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce engagement, calls himself a ‘romantic person’

JD Vance congratulated Taylor Swift on her engagement but stirred controversy, warning her romance with Travis Kelce could hand the Chiefs unfair NFL advantages.

After Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance also congratulated Taylor Swift on her engagement, but not without slipping in a conspiracy theory first. Vance, who’s had a very public feud with Swift ever since she slammed his “childless cat lady” remark and backed Kamala Harris during the election, used the moment to air his worries about the upcoming NFL season. He suggested Travis Kelce’s high-profile romance could give Chiefs some unfair advantages.

In an interview with USA Today, Vance, who calls himself a Cincinnati Bengals fan, said he fears the Kansas City Chiefs, Kelce’s team, could get special treatment from referees simply because of his high-profile romance. His remarks seemed to nod at last season’s record-breaking NFL viewership, where Swift’s jumbotron cameos were used to hype up games and pull in massive audiences. “I hope the NFL does not put a thumb on the scale for the Kansas City Chiefs just because Travis Kelce is now getting married to maybe the most famous woman in the world,” the former Ohio senator said. He joked about the NFL possibly turning it into a “Super Bowl wedding thing” this season, before warning that the Chiefs “have to follow the same rules as everybody else.”

He continued, “So if we see the refs being particularly friendly to Kansas City Chiefs players, then I think all football fans should be willing to push back on the NFL and say, ‘Look, you guys got to be fair.’ Just because Travis is getting married to Taylor, you still can’t put your thumb on the scale for the Kansas City Chiefs.” Vance seemed to be fueling the rumours of speculation that the league has been biased in Kansas City’s favour, especially after the team became the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions in nearly two decades in 2024.

As a result, this year, just before the Super Bowl, NFL Referees Association director Scott Green strongly denied the rigging rumors, calling them “insulting and preposterous.” Kelce’s team ended up losing the 2025 Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles, 40-22. Despite his criticism, Vance congratulated the couple and even slipped in a moment to call himself ‘romantic,’ saying he loves to see two people in love. “I just wish ’em the best, and I congratulate ’em,” Vance continued. “I hope they have a very long and healthy and happy life together.”

Elsewhere during the interview, the MAGA also brought up the ‘childless cat lady’ jab. He said he thinks most people want politicians to stick to politics and celebrities to focus on their own careers, whether singing, acting, or dancing. This comes just days after Donald Trump, who had gone after the pop star repeatedly online also took a U-turn on his stance and called the singer a ‘terrific person.’ He called Kelce “a great player.” Even Megyn Kelly, who admitted she’s not a Swift fan, said she respected Swift’s empire and thought it was great she finally found love with a “real man” like Kelce.
