Trevor Noah recently concluded his shows in India where he performed in Delhi and Mumbai, but in Bengaluru, the show got cancelled due to technical reasons. The attendees at the venue expressed their displeasure at the mismanagement but the audience was not happy with how Trevor took a dig at the same during his show in Mumbai. Now, Grammy-winning musician Ricky Kej has said that it was Trevor’s responsibility to check the venue a day prior, or a few hours earlier to see if his requirements were being met, instead of cancelling the show after it was supposed to start.

Ricky took to X (formerly Twitter) and said that while he agreed with the event management related issues cited by Trevor, “there is something known as a ‘Soundcheck’ and ‘Venue recce’ that every responsible and caring artiste caries out before a show”. He added, “If Trevor Noah really bothered about his ticket purchasing fans, then he would have made it a point to arrive earlier in the day (or previous night) and personally carried out a reconnaissance of the venue, tested out his microphone and ensured that the sound was optimum. I am sure he does that at other prestigious venues all over the world, and I am shocked to realize he did not bother to do this in Bengaluru. This is the artiste’s responsibility.”

Ricky said that every performer has their requirements and preferences and for them to “just show up for the event, without even checking your sound is hugely irresponsible”. He also added that if Trevor wanted screens at the venue “as he mentioned in his Mumbai rant, then he should have asked for them, given specifications”.

Ricky Kej mentioned that other international artistes like Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Iron Maiden, Bryan Adams, Metallica, Symphony Orchestras, Russel Peters have had successful shows in Bengaluru and questioned “why is Bengaluru being trashed now?”

Ricky wrote that Greek composer Yaani performed at the same venue in 2014 and the “experience was fantastic”. He added, “Yanni worked with everyone involved to deliver a spectacular concert. Yanni cared about his fans.”

The musician concluded his note by saying, “Trevor also attributed this incident to ‘India’ as a whole, which is in very bad taste. This is definitely a case of terrible event management, but more importantly a very complacent and irresponsible artist with a complete disregard for his paying fans (and India).. who blames everyone and everything but himself.”
