Greta Gerwig reacts to host Jo Coy’s sexist remarks about Barbie at Golden Globes: ‘He’s not wrong..’

People watching the Golden Globes weren’t happy with first-time host Jo Koy’s monologue on Sunday. He made a sexist joke about the year’s top movie – Barbie, and since Greta Gerwig’s film fights against gender stereotypes, many viewers thought Koy’s joke was tasteless and unnecessary. The joke in question was: “Oppenheimer is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and ‘Barbie’ is about a plastic doll with big boobies.”

Greta has reacted to the statement and instead of roasting or giving a fitting reply, the director kept things simple. She said on BBC Radio 4, “Well, he’s not wrong. She’s the first doll that was mass-produced with breasts, so he was right on. And you know, I think that so much of the project of the movie was unlikely because it is about a plastic doll.”

The director continued, “The insight that Ruth Handler (Barbie’s creator) had when she was watching her daughter play with baby dolls, is she realized, ‘My daughter doesn’t want to pretend to be a mother. She wants to pretend to be a grown woman.”

Gerwig’s movie won the first-ever Golden Globe for cinematic excellence and box office success. the film earned $1.4 billion globally and impressing both critics and audiences.

Koy also reacted to the criticism and told GMA3 that, “It’s a tough room. It was a hard job. I’m not gonna lie…I’d be lying if (I said) it doesn’t hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a stand-up comic but that hosting position it’s a different style. I kind of went in and did the writer’s thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”
