Golden Globes host Jo Koy on the ‘flat’ Taylor Swift joke, negative reviews: ‘It’s a tough room, it was a hard job’

Jo Koy's onstage jokes were not received as entertaining and he admits that some of them fell flat, including the one of Taylor Swift.

Comedian Jo Koy, who hosted the 2024 Golden Globes award received mixed responses to his onstage performance on the big night. While presenting coveted award night, his jokes were received as dull and he accepts that it did affect him. However, he stands by his performance and said that he loved doing what he did.

In an interview with GMA3, Jo spoke about the response his jokes got, including the ones on Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Taylor Swift’s NFL appearances. Some of Jo’s jokes are also being called sexist by netizens.

Reacting to his own performance, Jo said, “I had fun. You know, it was a moment that I’ll always remember. It’s a tough room. It was a hard job, I’m not going to lie…I’d be lying if (I said) it doesn’t hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a stand-up comic but that hosting position it’s a different style. I kind of went in and did the writer’s thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”

The comedian also said that his joke on Taylor Swift fell ‘flat’. On stage, Jo joked about the difference between Golden Globes and NFL game which aired on CBS right before the awards ceremony. The game featuring the Kansas City Chiefs, a team Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce is a part of.

Jo said, “I think it was when the Taylor (Swift) one was just a little flat…It was a weird joke, I guess. But it was more on the NFL…I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn’t come out that way.”

Jo’s latest Instagram post, which he posted just before the awards commenced, had some harsh reactions from netizens about his performance. A follower wrote, “You should be ashamed, really. The jokes weren’t funny”, while another one commented, “Congrats on being the worst host ever.”

When asked if he would want to host the Golden Globes again in future, he said, “I love the art of standup. It was cool the opportunity came to me, but hosting is just a beast. That’s about it.”
