Director Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy Barbie, based on the Mattel doll, is losing steam the box office, at least in India. The film could earn only Rs 2.50 crore on its first weekday, Monday, reported the industry tracker Sacnilk. This is a big fall from Sunday’s Rs 7.15 crore. The film’s below-par performance at the ticket counters can be attributed to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which had more takers.

Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film started its run in Indian theatres with Rs 5 crore. Over the weekend, it registered a total of Rs 18.65 cr, and now with Rs 2.50 cr on Monday, the film’s total collection in India stands at Rs 21.15 cr. By comparison, the Cillian Murphy-led Oppenheimer has earned Rs 55.75 cr in four days of release.

Internationally, however, Barbie is outperforming Oppenheimer. The news agency Associated Press reported on Monday, “Barbie earned $182 million from 69 territories, fueling a $337 million global weekend. Oppenheimer did $93.7 million from 78 territories, ranking above Barbie in India, for a $174.2 million global total.”

In her review of Barbie, the Indian Express’ Shalini Langer wrote that the film has “no place” for “uncomfortable questions”. A part of her review read, “You can’t shake off the feeling of the overarching Mattel influence on the film, in raising questions about Barbie and what it means or doesn’t for real women, but ensuring that the most uncomfortable ones land as feeble jokes or are kept to the background.”

Overall, both movies have brought back some cheer at the cinemas, which had been experiencing a dry spell for some time. Besides Satyaprem Ki Katha, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke and Mission Impossible 7, and Fast X, Indian audiences haven’t thronged theatres this year.
