Zoya Akhtar’s celebrated film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) completed 12 years of its release on Saturday. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Katrina Kaif among others, it revolves around a bachelor road trip of three best friends, which becomes a life-changing experience for them.

ZNMD was shot across 107 locations in Spain. The makers recreated the famous Tomatina festival of the country for the film. To shoot the scene, 16 tons of tomatoes were flown in from Portugal, as the local Spanish tomatoes were not ripe enough. Reportedly, the tomatoes came at a whopping price of Rs 1 crore.

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani had shared with IANS during the film’s release in 2011, “To recreate the Tomatina festival and make it look authentic, we had to call for some 16 tons of tomatoes from Portugal, as the tomatoes in Spain were not ripe.”

Talking about the festival, Zoya had said, “Tomatina in Spain is a festival closest to our Holi…they play with tomatoes and the world turns red for the day. The energy is infectious and the scene is a visual treat. We had a blast shooting this sequence but it was not all rosy. It was a logistical nightmare for the producer.”

She added that they had to shut down the entire Bunyol town in Spain to shoot the sequence. “We shot in the same location where the festival actually takes place and we had to shut down the town for it. The residents of Bunyol were extremely sweet and in turn, they celebrated Tomatina twice last year, once for Spain and once for India,” Zoya shared.

On Saturday, Zoya Akhtar shared a picture of the crew badge of the film and expressed gratitude. She wrote, “12 Years #crewbadge #znmd #bestcast #bestcrew #bestfans #onlygratitude.”
