Cricketer Yuvraj Singh has always been quite candid about his difficult and complicated relationship with his father Yograj Singh. Yuvraj got married to model and actor Hazel Keech in 2016, and have since then welcomed a boy, Orion, and a girl, Aura into their lives. During an old interview, Yuvraj talked about how he wants to be a different father than his own, and why he doesn’t want Orion to necessarily follow in his footsteps and become a cricketer. he revealed that he refused Yograj’s advice that Orion should start playing cricket.

While making an appearance on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, the World Cup winner was asked about how his father felt after Yuvraj won the famed tournament. He said, “I think he was okay after 2011. He used to compare himself to Kapil Dev and say that, ‘When Kapil had the 1983 trophy in his hand, I had you (Yuvraj) in my hand.’ That almost felt like an insult. But I think he was okay once I had a World Cup of my own. I just hope that he doesn’t get after Orion. He keeps saying that I should put him in cricket, but I tell him, ‘Isko apni life jeene do (Let him live his life.)’ It’s because he was always a coach to me, and never a father. I don’t want that to happen with my son, I want to be father to him.”

In a separate interview with Curly Tales, Yuvraj Singh had said something similar about his dad’s different approach to parenting. He said, “He was harsh at times, but it was also his dream that I live his dream, which I understood. There were times when I didn’t like it, but I think sometimes you have to do things which you don’t like to understand what you want to achieve. I was pushed a lot, but that is why I started playing for India when I was just 18.” Yuvraj added that he does not want to repeat the cycle and he often does activities with Orion that he didn’t get to do with his dad.

His wife Hazel has also been quite vocal about Yuvraj being a tremendous father. She told Bombay Times that their daughter starts crying the moment he leaves the room and said, “He’s like this big mountain of support. They feel so safe and secure in his arms, which makes me fall in love with him all over again. I’m proud of the father he’s become and the man he’s growing into.”
