When Twinkle Khanna auditioned for Shekhar Kapur in ghaghra-choli, accepted it was ‘atrocious’ but she still landed the part: ‘I laugh about it’

Twinkle Khanna recalled how she performed 'atrociously' at her screen test for Barsaat, which was her debut film.

Twinkle Khanna was still in college when producers and filmmakers started lining up outside her house and were keen on launching her in the movies. The daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, Twinkle wasn’t keen on working in movies but as soon as she made up her mind, the Deols took her under their wing and decided they would launch her with Bobby Deol in Barsaat. Twinkle, who now looks back at her career as an actor with humour, felt that her screen test for the film was ‘atrocious’.

In an interview with Rediff in 1999, Twinkle recalled her screen test with director Shekhar Kapur, who was the director of the film at that time. He later left the project and it was taken over by Rajkumar Santoshi. Twinkle recalled that she was dressed in a ‘ghagra-choli’ and was asked to say “I love you” in the screen test. “I did it so atrociously, that I laugh about it whenever I’m reminded of it. Otherwise, Barsaat was a film anyone would have loved for a launch,” she said.

She recalled that the shoot went on for a long time which got ‘tedious’. “Barsaat was a wonderful experience but it took a long time in the making and that got very tedious,” she said. She also spoke about how everyone expected her to work in the movies and spoke about the many offers she got as soon as she started college.

“Everyone knew that I would make an entry into films, so offers started coming in the day I took admission in college. But I wasn’t too keen then. I refused many offers and told mummy not to entertain anyone on my behalf. But then my friends — and everyone else — advised me to take the plunge. I thought about it and agreed to do it. I went and told mom I wanted to act in films and I had to be launched,” she said in the same interview.

Twinkle had a short career as an actor as she chose to step away from acting after she got married to actor Akshay Kumar in 2001. Twinkle is now an author and entrepreneur.
