Saif Ali Khan and Amrita SinghSaif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh divorced in 2004.

Before marrying Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan was married to Amrita Singh. In a candid conversation on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, Saif and Amrita opened up about their love story, recounting how their initial meeting at a photoshoot led to a dinner date, and eventually, marriage.

The couple’s first encounter took place on the set of a Rahul Rawail film, which was Saif’s debut project. Rahul, who shared a close friendship with Amrita, invited her to join the cast for a photoshoot. During the shoot, Saif took a bold step by placing his arm around Amrita for the picture—an action that immediately caught her attention.

A few days after the shoot, Saif dialed Amrita’s home number, hoping to invite her out for dinner. He recalled, “I called her and asked, ‘Would you like to go out for dinner with me?’ But she replied with something off-putting, like, ‘No, I don’t go out for dinner.’ Later she said, ‘You can come home for dinner if you like.’” When asked what had made him approach Amrita in the first place, Saif admitted, “Some sort of chord must have struck subconsciously.”

Reflecting on their dinner date, Saif shared, “By the end of the evening, we kissed each other. I never left her house after that dinner. I used to sleep in another room.” Amrita, adding her perspective, revealed, “He spent two days at my place, but had to leave for a shoot. The first thing he did was ask me for Rs. 100 because he had no money. So, I offered him my car. But Saif said the production car was waiting for him, so he didn’t need mine.” Amrita then insisted, “No, do take it. At least, you’ll come back to return the car.”

The couple also shared the details of their secret wedding, revealing they married without informing their parents beforehand. However, Saif did call his mother, veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, the following day to break the news. “My mother knew about our relationship, but she always told me, ‘I hope you’re happy in your relationship, but don’t get married.’ I was just 21, and it’s a strange thing for a mother to say.”

Amrita also recollected her first meeting with Sharmila after the marriage. She confessed feeling “stressed” during their encounter and recalled how Sharmila had sent Saif for a walk and gave her a “piece of her mind.”

Saif and Amrita were married for 13 years and have two children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. After their separation, Saif married Kareena Kapoor, and the couple now has two sons, Taimur Ali Khan and Jeh Ali Khan.
