As the son of actor Sharmila Tagore and cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, not to mention his royal lineage, Saif Ali Khan has often been made the poster child for nepotism and privilege. But in an old interview, Saif emphasised that just because he hasn’t struggled in the traditional sense of the word, it doesn’t mean that his journey has been a cakewalk.

In an interview shared on the WildFilmsIndia YouTube channel, Saif was praised for making a space for himself in the film industry on the strength of his work, and not because of his parents. This seemed to please him. Asked why it is taking him longer than expected to establish himself in his line of work, as compared to his parents, who achieved success at a very young age, Saif said in Hindi, “Everyone has their own journey, and thanks to god, I am in a happy place right now. I’m satisfied with where I am in the industry, and hopefully I’ll be more successful in the coming years.”

Asked if he had to experience fewer struggles in comparison to others when he started out, Saif said, “People think struggle is taking auto rickshaws and going from door to door looking for opportunities. I’ve struggled as well, but my struggle has been different. I was kicked out of my first film, because the director said, ‘You either leave your girlfriend or you do the film’. It was a moral choice. How do you say moral choice in Hindi?” When he was told that he was in a ‘dharam sankat’, Saif initially felt that it was ‘too dramatic’, but then seemed to like the sound of it.

Saif also said that he knew by the age of six that he was no good at cricket, and so when he grew up, he decided to take a stab at acting, because he genuinely felt that he could do as well as his mother. He has since established himself as one of the leading actors in the Hindi film industry. Saif was last seen in the critical and commercial disaster Adipurush.
