On June 27, fans celebrated the 84th birth anniversary of renowned music director RD Burman, widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in the Hindi music industry. Burman debuted as a composer with comedian Mehmood’s 1961 movie Chhote Nawab. His musical prowess brought a significant transformation to the industry, with his compositions becoming game-changers that defined the era of the 70s and 80s. Despite his untimely demise at the age of 54 in 1994, his influence and legacy live on.

Recently, an old BBC interview of RD Burman resurfaced, where he can be heard offering insights into the process of creating background scores for films. In the interview, Burman highlighted the practice of giving paramount importance to songs which shaped the narrative of films, while background scores often received no attention.

Addressing the lack of compelling background music in films, Burman explained that makers would approach composers a month before the film’s release, requesting the background score. However, he expressed pride in the quality of music produced within such a limited timeframe.

He said, “Makers come to composers a month before the film’s release and ask them to give the background score to the film. I feel that the music we make during that short amount of time is also very good, given the time constraints. ”

Talking about the process of giving background music to scenes, he said, “I see the film two-three time and then I make a list of all the places where we need to add background music, we also note the timing. We then try to give the background music as soon as possible.”

Though background music generally did not receive as much emphasis, Burman acknowledged producers like Dev Anand, who recognised its significance. He said, “We don’t give that much importance to background music, but their are some producers like Dev Anand sahab who give equal importance to background score. For instance, in his film Hare Rama Hare Krishna background score is given according to every scene.”

Hare Rama Hare Krishna was a 1971 film, which was directed and produced by Dev Anand. Dev also starred in the film, alongside Mumtaz and Zeenat Aman.
