When Neetu Kapoor yelled at father-in-law Raj Kapoor, ‘was very angry’ at husband Rishi Kapoor: ‘He was very drunk’

Neetu Kapoor was just 22 when she got married to Rishi Kapoor and became a part of Raj Kapoor’s family. Neetu was already a movie star when she started dating Rishi and the two had already starred in a few films together. But before she got married to Rishi, she had a very formal relationship with her father-in-law to-be so when she yelled at him over the phone, she was quite embarrassed.

Neetu recalled this incident in Ritu Nanda’s book Raj Kapoor – The One and Only Showman, and shared that she actually called Rishi’s house to yell at him because he had gotten too drunk at a party, but Raj Kapoor took the call and she accidentally yelled at him as she could not tell their voices apart. “Once, when I was dating my husband, he was very drunk when he went home. I was very angry with him. I called him up and fired him on the phone. I was stunned when I heard from the other end, only one sentence, ‘Don’t you see a difference in the voice between a father and a son?’ Their voices were so similar and I was very embarrassed,” she recalled.

Neetu recalled another incident about her father-in-law and said that he once compared to her to his wife Krishna Kapoor, which was a “huge compliment” for her. “Once I was at a party. I knew that Papa was a big drinker but I asked him for a soft drink. He said to me, ‘Here comes my Krishna!’ We all know how important his wife was in his life. For him to compare me with her, even if he didn’t mean it, was a huge compliment! I felt very good about it,” she said.

Neetu got married to Rishi in 1980 and stepped away from the movies at the peak of her career. Neetu worked in a couple of films in the latter part of her career with husband Rishi, like Do Dooni Chaar and Besharam. She actively started working in films and television shows after Rishi’s passing in 2020. She has since appeared as a judge in Dance Deewane and 2022’s film Jug Jugg Jeeyo. She will next be seen in Letters to Mr Khanna, which also stars Sunny Kaushal.
