Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor’s 1996 film Raja Hindustani was a commercial and critical success. The film also grabbed headlines for its much-talked-about kissing scene between the lead actors. In a resurfaced interview now going viral, Karisma opened up about the challenges they faced while filming the scene.

In an interview with Rajeev Masand, the actor shared, “We have been through gruelling circumstances. People say, ‘Oh, that kiss’ and all, but what we have gone through that shoot for three days… In Ooty, in February… we were like, ‘Kab khatam ho raha hai yeh kiss scene? (When is this kiss scene getting over?)'”

Karisma added, “It was freezing cold with storm, fans and cold water. We have worked in those circumstances from 7 am till 6 in the evening, shivering away between takes. So that was a different era of, I think, working in those kinds of circumstances.”

In an earlier interview with Lehren Retro, Raja Hindustani director Dharmesh Darshan revealed that during Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor’s kissing scene, Karisma’s mother Babita Kapoor was present on the set on all three days. “She was very good on set, she was very excited. I could smell it on her. She was so sincere… She’d never done a kissing scene before. I told her what she would be wearing, the background wouldn’t be ‘sexy,'” he said.

The filmmaker added, “She said, ‘You don’t need to tell me so much’. Then I called Babita ji inside and narrated that sequence. Because Karisma was still very young, and mother can influence, no? And Lolo had a good image; she wasn’t a very noisy girl. Babita ji sat through the full three days of the shoot, and I didn’t send her away.”

Besides Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor, the film also featured Kunal Khemu, Johny Lever, and Archana Puran Singh.
