As Koi Mil Gaya celebrates its 20th anniversary, Hrithik Roshan, the film’s lead actor, has opened up about how his father and the film’s director, Rakesh Roshan, nearly abandoned the idea of creating the film, and how Anil Kapoor played a pivotal role in rescuing it. During a recent interview, Hrithik also shared his newfound perspective on his own acting abilities after watching the film with his sons, Hrehaan and Hridhaan.

Talking to Film Companion, Hrithik said, “I have lived with this film since it got released and it was ageing really well up until I saw it with my kids, which was very recent. I didn’t even need to hear their feedback because just looking at the film with that filter, sitting with them and watching it, I realised how much our cinema has evolved. How much our expressions, interpretations, how much the audiences focus on nuances – all of that has emerged so beautifully in the past few years. Thanks to all the content of the world being available to everybody now, everybody is getting educated.”

Critiquing his performance in Koi Mil Gaya, Hrithik said, “Honestly, I felt like I was good but if I would have to do that film now, oh my god, I would have not needed to do so much. I was so afraid at that time that the audience would not get my exact thought. I wanted them to understand every single thought of mine. So, if I am angry but there is dignity I want them to see it in my eyes. I want them not to miss anything. There was that fear. Today, that fear is not there because the audience understands. All of us through the pandemic have done so much introspection. Today, you don’t need to do so much.”

Talking about how Koi Mil Gaya almost didn’t get made, Hrithik said, “When my father got the idea, it was bolstered by my incredible superlative reaction to it. I was so excited by the idea of playing this character, I could just feel that there is something waiting to explode. That gave him the humongous push at that time until the outside world started infiltrating that solid thought and gave him a worldview, telling him, ‘Hey, this is an action hero (Hrithik) and you are making him play the character of a mentally challenged guy in a sci-fi film, there is jaadu..it’s too risky and at this point of time your son should comeback as an action hero’.”

He added, “He hit a breaking point and he told me, ‘Let’s not make it,’ Then I remember talking to his very good friend Anil Kapoor. I asked him what he felt about the film, and he said he absolutely loved it, then I begged him to convince my dad to make the film. I think he could see in my eyes the sense of loss and how heart-breaking it would have been if my father would not make this film. Anil had a conversation with my dad, I entered that conversation and within that conversation, I saw my dad’s eyes lit up. Then he took the decision and it was unbreakable.”
