Yo Yo Honey Singh had a successful, if controversial, reign at the top of the charts until his diagnosis with bipolar disorder and battle with depression. As he tries to return to the music scene, he has said that relationships he forged with top stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Saalman Khan have left him in good stead.

In a podcast with Raj Shamani, Honey Singh shared that he doesn’t have any friends, but he does have ‘mentors and godbrothers’. “Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan and even Amitabh Bachchan, he is like my godfather. Bachchan saab ne apne sath khada hone ka chance de diya (He let me stand beside him). They have given me a chance, they have stood by me when I was out of the scene and was unwell. Honestly, I was focussed on independent music and wasn’t keen on Bollywood. But last year, Akshay paaji said that I want you in my film Selfiee. He just said you are back, looking fit and happy. Salman bhai also gave me a short rap in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. He called me in Hyderabad and gave me a chance to perform. They are such wise people; working with them is such a blessing. There are lots of people more talented than me but I feel I am gifted by God.”

He also spoke about working with Shah Rukh Khan, and how the star gave him important advice. “Around 10 years back, he asked me how do you work. I said that from my heart. He told me SRK, AR Rahman, Gulzar and Mani Ratnam made a film ‘Dil Se’ (from the heart) but it flopped. He told me that once in a while you also have to work using your mind. That’s when I decided that while I will use my heart while making the audio, I will use my mind when packaging it.”

The rapper also recalled a time when they were abroad for a tour, and Honey Singh asked him why is he not doing any action films. “He said I have a zone set right now but I will do it after 10 years. And then, I will make a body so well that no one else has done it. And see, today, he’s done it,” Singh added.
