Veteran actor Hema Malini, who attended the inaugural session of Waves Summit 2025 on Wednesday, recently criticised the kind of films that are being made currently and said that everyone is making “gruesome and violent” films. Hema said that her era in the movies was the “best time” and added that she worked very hard across the decades to maintain her status in the film industry.

In a chat with HT City, Hema said, “That was the best time I must say. I am really lucky to have worked in so many films under so many directors. Very few people get that opportunity. I am very proud to be a part of this beautiful film industry. If someone talks bad about this industry, I feel very sad. It have given so many people name, fame and glory, so many people have got it. But only those who work with dedication, don’t get distracted and just concentrate on your work. That’s why till date, I have my name.”

Hema was then asked about the current state of the film industry when a lot of films are not doing well. “My time was the best,” she said and added, “Aaj ki film theek hai, acha hai, bana rahe hain bechare, sab bana rahe hain. (It’s okay, everyone is trying to make films.) Everything is very gruesome, violence itna hai. Nothing is interesting to watch. You feel scared to even touch ki yeh picture dekhu ki nahi, ghabarahat hoti hai (Should I even watch? It gives you anxiety). Everybody is having a sword in their hand and killing everybody. Kuch bhi pleasant, happiness dene vala nahi hai (There is nothing pleasant that gives you happiness.)” Hema added that everyone is making “dark films.”
