Waheeda Rehman was visibly emotional as she received a standing ovation at the 69th National Film Awards. The actor was honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke award.

Veteran actor Waheeda Rehman was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 69th National Film Awards on Tuesday in Delhi. The ceremony, presided by President Droupadi Murmu, saw Waheeda receiving a standing ovation as she went up to the stage to recieve the award. A short clip was then played that showcased Waheeda’s film work over the years. Upon seeing herself as a teenager in her first ever film appearance in Rojulu Marayi (1955), she couldn’t help but smile. As the venue roared with applause for the veteran actor, she had tears in her eyes.
The video had her saying, “I want people to remember me as a good human being.” As the 85-year-old actor walked up the stage, it was announced that she was the eighth female artist to be honoured with the most prestigious award in Indian cinema. Waheeda has previously been honoured with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards.
After accepting the award, she addressed the gathering and said that one needs the support of other technicians to be successful and she was lucky enough to get this support from her early days. “I feel very honoured, very humbled. But the place where I am standing today, it is all because of my loving film industry. Luckily, I got to work with the best directors, producers, technicians, writers, music directors, and they all supported me. They gave me love and respect,” she said.

She then continued and mentioned the costume, make-up and hair department for her contribution. “And lastly, I would like to thank make up artists, hair dressers, costume makers, they have a large contribution. I would like to share this award with all the departments in films,” she said. Her closing statement reiterated that filmmaking was a collective effort as she said, “One person cannot make a full film, they need every one of us,” she said.
Waheeda Rehman is known for her Hindi films like CID, Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Guide, Prem Pujari, Reshma Aur Shera, Kabhi Kabhie among others.
