Vivek Oberoi is not only known for his talent as an actor but also for his sharp entrepreneurial skills. Besides his ventures in real estate, he has founded several companies and invested in 30 firms. Recently, he spoke about his entrepreneurial journey, expressing gratitude to his father, actor-politician Suresh Oberoi, for instilling a business mindset in him.

“I was about 10 years old when my father approached me, saying we’d go on a holiday in a month, but before that, he would teach me something over the first four weeks. He asked me to keep a diary and track the inventory of perfumes he had purchased for me. He told me that whatever I managed to sell beyond the marked price would be mine,” Vivek shared in an interview with Entertainment Live. He added that this exercise was his father’s way of teaching him about accounting, sales and business concepts.

“I went door to door on my bicycle, carrying my school bag filled with the inventory and merchandise. I made mistakes but learned a lot. I kept at it every year. By the time I was 15, I started developing my own ideas and ventured into the stock market. I began pursuing small entrepreneurial projects,” he said, adding that he founded a tech company at the age of 19 and sold it for a profit at 22. “That’s when I realised it was possible to establish a company, sell it to an MNC and help both investors and myself earn money.”

He also mentioned that his entrepreneurial journey supported him when his film career faced challenges. “I felt capable and confident that I could do something on my own. That was the point when my journey restarted,” he added. Emphasising his commitment to everything he does, Vivek said, “There should be no mistake in hard work from my side. We have to give 100 per cent. When we do that, the result would mostly be good: be it in films, business, philanthropy or love. Sometimes you get tired because of the workload. But when the team and people are so good, you join forces, contribute and they understand the vision.”

Reflecting on his belief in collaboration, Vivek recounted his experience during the 2004 tsunami. He recalled, “During the 2004 tsunami, I went to ground zero and realized that if I raised my flag saying, ‘I am Vivek Oberoi, and I’m doing a project here,’ it wouldn’t work. So, I created something called Project Hope and told people this was a collective platform with no boss or owner.” He added that this experience taught him many valuable lessons.
