Vidhu Vinod Chopra says people in Hollywood told him 12th Fail should have represented India at Oscars: ‘Not whatever went’
Jude Anthany Joseph's 2018 was chosen as India's choice for the Best International Feature Film category that year.

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra has claimed that he was told his film 12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey, would have been a more suitable representative of India. The film was submitted for consideration last year for Academy Awards’ Best International Film category. India sent Jude Anthany Joseph’s 2018 instead which failed to make the long list.
Director and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, on the third day of Indian International Film Festival (IFFI) in Goa on Friday, while discussing his 1989 film Parindaa, Chopra was asked why thrillers don’t get the National Award, to which he responded by saying, “You are giving too much importance to the National Awards.”
He then shared how people have been telling him that his 2023 film 12th Fail was better suited to represent India at the 97th Academy Awards. He said, “Can I tell you one thing in return that so many people have told me, including people in Hollywood, that 12th Fail should have represented India at Oscars, not whatever went.”
He then asked the audiences if they agree with him, he said, “Say yes or no, do I care? What I care for — did I make a good film, did I not make a good film. So please don’t give so much importance (to awards). Awards are for people outside of (the industry) who are acknowledging you for God knows what reasons. So please don’t bother.”
Chopra also revealed plans to restore some of his most iconic films, including 3 Idiots and Parinda, in 8K resolution, with a theatrical re-release slated for next year.
“I have put a hell lot of money to restore all our films, from Parinda to 1942: A Love Story to 3 Idiots. And they will be screened next year as restored 8K movies,” he said.
