Udta Punjab row: Removing Pahlaj Nihlani from CBFC not a solution, says Anurag Kashyap

Kashyap also thanked the film industry for its support and said that it should always come together on issues like this. “The industry always needed to come together, this time it did, stood as one,”said the producer.

Shahid Kapoor, who plays the character of protagonist Tomy Singh in Udta Punjab, said he has complete respect for the judgment and the release would not have been possible without the effort of Anurag Kashyap. We could not have done it without the relentless efforts of Anurag Kashyap. I have complete respect for the judgment, agree with almost everything the judgement said,” said Kapoor.

He also added that the film gives a strong message against the drug menace. “I never saw an issue with the content of movie, I felt that the movie would be beneficial in spreading awareness,”said Kapoor.

Meanwhile, CBFC chairman Pahlaj Nihlani welcomed the decision of the Bombay High Court but asserted that he would continue to raise objection if he finds anything wrong with the content of a film and the fimmakers are free to challenge his decision in the court. I welcome the court’s decision and will abide by it. Every producer has right to approach court. It is not about anyone’s win or loss. I was doing my job, following guidelines given,”said Nihlani.

Udta Punjab had been facing controversy ever since Nihalani ordered 13 cuts, which included cutting down references to Punjab, elections, political parties and the reference in the name of the film.

Anurag Kashyap, one of the producers of the film, appealed to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), after a Bombay high court order helped them receive the official letter from the CBFC informing them about the cuts.
