Twinkle Khanna asked dad Rajesh Khanna why he had barred Dimple Kapadia from working after marriage: ‘Wanted mother for my children’
In 1990, two of Hindi cinema's greatest stars, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, got together to hash things out in a magazine interview. They also addressed the question that they didn't let their wives -- Dimple Kapadia and Jaya Bachchan -- work after marriage.

Dimple Kapadia gave up her acting career just when she was about to explode. She appeared in only one movie, and then spent the next decade raising her two daughters with the late superstar Rajesh Khanna. During that decade, her marriage crumbled under the weight of his ego, and in the 1980s, she walked out with the girls, Twinkle and Rinke. In an interview with his greatest rival, Amitabh Bachchan, published in the 1990 issue of Movie magazine, both actors addressed allegations that they’d forced their wives to quit working.
Khanna said that when Twinkle was old enough, he encouraged her to follow in his footsteps. But she wanted to know why she was allowed to act when her mother wasn’t. He said, “I had no problems about my wife working. But when I married Dimple, I wanted a mother for my children. I didn’t want them to be brought up by servants. And I had no idea of Dimple’s talent; Bobby was still not released. Recently, when I told one of my daughters Twinkle, that if she would like to act in a film, I would produce one for her. She said, ‘You will let me act but to mummy you say no.’ I said, ‘For the simple reason that I am your father and not your husband.'”
He continued, “Besides, if I knew at that moment that Bobby would prove her talent, I wouldn’t have stopped her. To curb talent is cruel. By the time I saw Bobby our first daughter was already born.” He said that he didn’t curb Tina Munim’s career when they lived together many years later. “I made a film for her. We acted in so many films together. She was not even that interested but I said, ‘Work, get it out of your system.’ I did not want to repeat the same mistake.”

In the mid-1990s, when Khanna had moved to New Delhi after his acting career declined, he emerged from obscurity to attend one of Twinkle’s launch events. Asked if had any advice for her as she took a plunge in the turbulent waters of Bollywood, he said, “She often asks me for advice, and I tell her that I had no godfather in the industry when I started out, and that she must find her own way as well. I told her not to seek advice from her mother as well, because if she asks her mother for advice, she’ll only get more confused.”
At an event in Jaipur, Dimple Kapadia had reflected on how Twinkle dealt with her separation from Khanna. She had said, “She’s an amazing child. She must have been all of seven or eight when I got separated. The kind of maturity… She was only wanting to take care of me, to see if I was okay, if everything was alright with me.”
