While Bollywood is experiencing a period of struggle with numerous films failing to make an impact at the box office, Sudipto Sen’s controversial movie The Kerala Story is defying the trend and achieving unprecedented success. The film, which has already emerged as the second biggest hit of the year surpassing the lifetime collections of Ranbir Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor starrer Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar in less than two weeks, is now on the way to entering the Rs 200-crore club.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film’s net box office collection will cross the Rs 200-crore mark on Monday, making it the second Bollywood film after Pathaan to cross the coveted number in 2023. While the film minted Rs 6.60 crore on Friday, its collection spiked to Rs 9.15 crore on Saturday and reached Rs 11.50 crore on Sunday.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film scored around Rs 27 crore net in its third weekend, taking the total collection to over Rs 198 crore in just 17 days. The Adash Sharma movie has so far grossed over Rs 240 crore worldwide, surpassing the lifetime total of Tu Jhooti Main Makkaar’s Rs 223 crore gross.

Shah Rukh Khan’s all-time blockbuster Pathaan is currently the highest-grossing Indian movie of the year with over Rs 540 crore net, Sacnilk stated.

Amid the row over the film, renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently came out in support of The Kerala Story. He also criticised Bollywood for its “death-like silence on the shattering success of the film.” RGV also said the film will haunt Bollywood like a “mysterious fog in every story discussion room and corporate house.”

“We are so comfortable in telling lies to both others and ourselves that when someone goes ahead and shows the truth we get SHOCKED… That explains the DEATH like SILENCE of BOLLYWOOD on the SHATTERING SUCCESS of #KeralaStory,” the filmmaker said in the first tweet of a series.

Meanwhile, BJP’s IT cell chief Amit Malviya on Sunday claimed that despite the Supreme Court lifting the ban on the movie ‘The Kerala Story’ in West Bengal, not a single theatre in Kolkata was screening the movie.
