John Abraham-starrer The Diplomat has been in the theatres for a week and has managed to sustain itself despite getting some tough competition from Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava that has been dominating the box office for over a month. In a new interview, John was asked about the industry chatter about The Diplomat since the film was rejected by many OTT platforms, which caused a delay in its theatrical release. The actor-producer admitted that since no OTT platform was ready to buy the film, the studio behind the film lost confidence in it. Many filmmakers in the recent past have shared that it is almost impossible to get one’s film made and released without the backing of an OTT platform.

In a chat with Pinkvilla, John said that it was only him and director Shivam Nair who did not lose faith in the film. “When a studio sees the film and when it goes and does the rounds of OTTs, the studio may want to mitigate the risk by sending it to an OTT channel. When some OTT channels have refused The Diplomat because they didn’t find it great, they didn’t find it good, they rejected the film, they threw it out so what happens is, the studio presumably also gets scared and says the film is not good, no one is liking it and they keep it in the cans,” he said.

John said that since the studio has invested money in the film, it is understandable that they will have some fears. “You have to understand that the studio puts in money in these films so sometimes they are justified in the fear that they have,” he said and added that in the case of The Diplomat, they proved the OTTs wrong. “In the case of The Diplomat, we have proved the studio wrong, we have proved the OTTs wrong, we have proved everyone wrong,” he said.

John even made claims that The Diplomat will hold at the box office if the studio and the distributors put their might behind it. He said so even though Salman Khan-starrer Sikandar is less than two weeks away from its release. “Mark my words, The Diplomat will hold. It will only fall if the studio and the distributor lose faith in it. The studio needs to market this film. You are marketing something that people have seen and said is a brilliant film,” he said and added, “It’s up to the studio to put their might behind it and make this film run for the next six weeks because it has got legs.” The film has made Rs 19 crore in its first week, as per Sacnilk.

In the same interview, John was also asked the eight-week window between the theatrical and OTT release. Recently, Aamir said that the length of the window is too short for films to work in theatres as the audience already knows that the film would be available at home in two months. John agreed with Aamir and said, “I want to agree with him because I believe that you need a larger window. Aamir comes with a lot more experience than I do and he is way smarter than I am so he understands the space way better and I think what he says makes a lot of sense.”
