Govinda and Sunita Ahuja got married when he was yet to establish himself as a movie star. In fact, at the time, they got married secretly as it was commonly believed that mainstream stars only get accepted by their audience if they are romantically unattached. But, 37 years later, things aren’t so secretive anymore as Govinda and Sunita Ahuja are battling divorce rumours.

Sunita had said Love andha hota hai, aankhein ab khul rahi hain (Love is blind, but I am seeing the truth now),” in a chat with Curly Tales as she spoke about her ever evolving relationship with Govinda. She also implied that she and her husband were not on the best terms as she declared that they were now living separately. “We have two houses, we have a bungalow opposite our apartment. I have my temple and my kids in the flat. We live in the flat whereas he gets late after his meetings. He loves talking so he’ll gather 10 people and sit chatting with them,” she told Hindi Rush.

In the same chat, Sunita expressed that she did not want Govinda as her husband in her next life making it obvious that their union wasn’t something that she cherished. She shared that hoped for a life partner in her next life who wants the same things as her as she had never experienced any small joys with Govinda. “I have told him that in my next life, he should not be my husband. He doesn’t go on holidays. I am a person who wants to go out with her husband and eat pani-puri on the streets. He spent too much time working. I don’t recall a single instance when we both went out to watch a movie,” she said.

Sunita and Govinda came from different backgrounds when they got married. In many interviews, she has stated that she used to live in Bandra and he lived in Virar, implying that there came from different social classes. In fact, Sunita’s father did not approve of the relationship and hence, did not attend her wedding. She “went from wearing miniskirts to sarees” just so she could please his family. And he, worked round the clock. She also shared that Govinda was working five shifts on the day their first child was born and wasn’t around.

Govinda was one of the most popular stars of the time so Sunita was often asked about dealing with insecurities since he always got a lot of female attention. In another chat with Hindustan Times, she said, “Dil par patthar rakhna padta hai kyunki kabhi yahan link up, kabhi wahan. But often he would be working non-stop so time hi nahi tha affair karne ka. (It used to be very difficult for me to deal with the rumours of his linkups and affairs, but because he used to work on several films simultaneously, he barely had any time for an affair. )” She then added that while she wasn’t insecure back in the day, she was worried now. “Ab woh (Govinda) kaam nahi kar raha hai, toh mujhe insecurity hai kahi affair na kar le. 60 ke baad log sathiya jaate hain. (However, he has been out of work for the past two years so now I afraid he might have an affair . People tend to go senile after 60.)”

In the same chat, Sunita said that one shouldn’t trust men and shared, “Don’t trust men too much, girgit hote hain ye log (they are chameleons). Don’t depend on kids either. Once kids are grown up and you have done your bit for them and they have their lives, apni zindagi jeeyo. After a certain age, every woman should take time out for herself, for her interest, for her well being.”

She told Hindi Rush, “Maine bola ki agar mai goli maarti toh pair par na maarti, seene par maarti. (If I had pulled the trigger, I would’ve shot him in the chest, not on his foot).”
