Sonam Khan, a senior actor, has often spoken fondly of the late thespian Divya Bharti. Khan has previously described Bharti as a remarkable talent who had a bright future ahead of her. In her reflections, Khan frequently highlights Bharti’s vibrant screen presence and her ability to infuse her roles with natural charm. Despite Bharti’s career and life being tragically cut short, Khan acknowledges her significant impact on the film industry and the void left by her untimely passing.

“She was a very nice girl. Agar wo aaj zinda hoti toh top par hoti. It’s upsetting, accident jo unka hua, nahi hona chahiye tha, lekin ab kya kar sakte hain. (Had she been alive today, she would be at the top. It’s an unfortunate accident that happened with her; it shouldn’t have happened, but what can we do now?),” the Vishwatama actor told Bollywood Bubble recently.

The Ajooba actor further revealed that Bharti was the first choice of her former husband, director Rajiv Rai, for playing the female lead in his action thriller Mohra. However, her untimely demise led to Raveena Tandon playing the role. The film also starred Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Naseeruddin Shah in key roles.

Wo actually mere jinse maine shaadi ki thi, Rajeev Rai ji, unhone unko Mohra ke liye sign kiya tha. To shooting bhi ho chuki thi uss picture ki. Jab unka dehant hua, main apne bete ke saath kuch aath mahine pregnant thi. Unka shayad April mein dehant hua, if I’m not mistaken, aur May mein mera bachcha paida hua hai. Unke dehant se kuch din pehle hi maine unse baat ki thi. (She was signed for Mohra by Rajeev Rai, my ex-husband. The shooting for that film was already underway. When she passed away, I was about eight months pregnant with my son. She likely passed away in April, if I’m not mistaken, and my baby was born in May. I had spoken to her just a few days before her death.),” she recalled.

Reminiscing about her last conversation with Bharti, a few days before she passed away on April 5, 1993, after allegedly falling from the balcony window of her fifth-floor apartment in Versova,  Khan added, “Toh mujhe kehti thi ki chaand ki taraf dekho, bahut khoobsurat bachcha paida hoga tumhari tarah. Wo ek actress thi jinke saath meri bahut bani hai aur wo jahan bhi ho, khush rahe. Aur kya keh sakti hoon main? (She used to tell me to look at the moon, saying that I would have a beautiful baby just like me. She was an actress with whom I had a great bond, and wherever she is, I hope she is happy).” The Deewana actor was only 19 at the time of her death.

In the same interview, Sonam highlighted that friendship between two female actors was rare in those days.  Interestingly, on Friendship Day, Sonam took to her Instagram handle to pay homage to her two friends from the industry, Sridevi and Divya. Sharing two sets of photographs with the late actors, the 51-year-old wrote, “Some friendships are not to be mentioned. It’s an emotional day for me. #HappyFriendshipsDay, everyone!”
