What happens when the women of Heeramandi, playing courtesans of Lahore in the Netflix show, try their hand at an art form that is both liked and reviled in India in today’s day and age — roast, done in the style of a mushaira. Hosted by stand-up comedian Munawa Faruqui, it had Aditi Rao Hyadri, Manisha Koirala and Sharmin Segal facing off against Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjeeda Shaikh.

Actor Sharmin Segal, who is Heeramandi The Diamond Bazaar’s creator Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece, has been facing flak for her “poor performance” in the Netflix show from a section of viewers. Now a clip of Sonakshi Sinha, who plays the role of Fareedan in the show, roasting Sharmin during the mushaira has gone viral. In the clip, as Sonakshi roasts Sharmin, she claims the latter showed up on the Heeramandi set unprepared.

In the video that has surfaced on Reddit, Sonakshi roasts Sharmin along with Munawar Faruqui. She goes on to say, “Sharmin wanted to wrap the set early every day. She went to bed early every night because the next day she had to go to school too.” Watch:

She adds, “The number of Gen Z words that Sharmin memorises in a day, I wish some day, she would also memorise her dialogues before coming to the set.” After Sonakshi, Sharmin roasted Sonakshi for being ‘jaali’ based on her character’s moves in the show.

Despite praise for co-stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sonakshi Sinha, Manisha Koirala, and Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin’s performance has been heavily criticised on social media, so much so that she was recently compelled to disable comments on an Instagram post featuring her with Bhansali at the recent premiere of Heeramandi in Los Angeles. Actor Shruti Sharma, who played the role of a maid to Sharmin’s charatcer, recently criticised the audiences for trolling the actor and said that it is taking a toll on Sharmin’s mental health.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Shruti said that trolling is bad and revealed that she had no idea about Sharmin’s situation. She said, “Honestly, I wasn’t aware that people were trolling her until now. I don’t know what audiences have liked or not liked about Sharmin, but I’ve seen her trying her best like everyone else on the sets. It doesn’t matter who’s being trolled, but trolling is a bad thing to do.”

She added, “Criticism is one thing; healthy criticism is always welcome, but trolling is unacceptable. It is a very negative way of approaching anyone. It is a kind of mental harassment. If it is happening, I am very concerned for her right now.”
