Somy Ali supports Zeenat Aman’s live-in relationship stance after backlash from Mumtaz, Saira Banu: ‘We no longer live in 1950s’
Somy Ali echoed Zeenat Aman's viewpoint on live-in relationships, suggesting they could potentially reduce high divorce rates in the country.

Zeenat Aman stirred controversy and faced backlash from fellow actors following her advocacy for live-in relationships in a recent Instagram post. Now, former actor Somy Ali, who is rumoured to have dated Salman Khan, has come out in support of Zeenat’s stance. Somy echoed the veteran actor’s viewpoint on live-in relationships, suggesting they could potentially reduce high divorce rates in the country.
Reflecting on her acquaintance with Zeenat Aman, Somy revealed that she was Zeenat’s neighbour a few years ago and they often crossed paths. Promoting her stance on live-in relationship, she told Hindustan Times, “A lot of people have condemned her. Our population has peaked at 8 billion. I am not at all against live-in relationships. Whatever Zeenat Ji has said, I 100% support her in this. Because when you are in a live-in relationship with someone, you can set boundaries. No means no. You get to know about each other. We all have our idiosyncrasies. There can be habits that you like or dislike in an individual. So, you can learn a lot about personal likes and dislikes in a live-in relationship. It helps in bringing down divorce rates.”
Highlighting Zeenat Aman’s educational background, particularly her journalism studies in San Francisco on a scholarship, Somy defended the veteran actor’s credibility and said, “Zeenat ji is highly intellectual and has studied journalism in San Fransisco through scholarship. She is intelligent, well-read and articulate. I want to tell the naysayers that we no longer live in the 1950s. In 2024, the world has changed a lot, and a man and a woman can be in a live-in relationship.”
Somy also drew attention to the potential societal benefits of embracing live-in relationships, including a possible decline in dowry-related issues. She said, “We have seen so many cases where people get married without knowing each other and then end up getting into a divorce. This is quite common in arranged marriages in both Pakistan and India. Dowry is illegal in both India and Pakistan, yet people do not shy away from asking it. Everything goes on behind the curtains, be it India, Pakistan or America. One last thing I would like to say about Zeenat Ji. What she has suggested can help in bringing down the divorce rate. If you are in a live-in, then you will be able to figure out if you have compatibility with your partner. Zeenat Ji has done a huge favour to us by expressing her views on live-in relationships.”
In the past, Somy Ali had shared details about her tumultuous relationship with Salman Khan. In a tell-all Instagram post in 2023, she claimed to have faced abuse during their time together. Salman Khan, however, has never spoken about their past relationship publicly.
Regarding Zeenat Aman, the actor encountered disapproval from peers such as Saira Banu and Mumtaz following her endorsement of live-in relationships on Instagram. Zeenat, however, addressed the criticism, asserting, “Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I’ve never been one to comment on others personal lives or tear down my colleagues, and I’m not going to start now.”
